For Immediate Release

Tulsa, Okla. – Massage therapy (MT) instructors Ross Ashcraft (Department Head) and Sharon Truelove attended the Upledger’s Institute International workshop given in Oklahoma City, Okla., for four full days October 6, 7, 8 and 9 to learn Craniosacral Therapy.

“I was thrilled to experience first-hand the profound results of the gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of the craniosacral system. It’s wonderful to experience, learn and pass on to others something so gentle and healing. It’s also used as a preventative health measure,” said Truelove.

Upon returning from the work shop both Ashcraft and Truelove introduced the modality to the MT class by way of using a still-point. A still-point places the client’s head resting in the therapist’s hands in a particular way that acts like a reset button to the Craniosacral system. The students loved learning how to do a still-point and, better yet, receiving it.

“It is amazing how such a powerful transformation can happen because of such small efforts,” said Ashcraft.

The Massage Therapy Department is planning to make Craniosacral Therapy a part of their continuing education program in the near future.

The Massage Therapist plays an important role in the growing healthcare fields of preventative healthcare, sports and wellness systems. Students of the CCC MT program learn anatomy and physiology of the body as it relates to soft tissue injury and treatment. Students engage in supervised hands-on training in traditional Swedish massage and other modalities such as hydrotherapy, sports massage, clinical protocols, chair massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, lymphatic massage, and therapeutic spa treatments.

For Immediate Release

Tulsa, Okla., (September 12, 2010) – Tammy Dickeson, certified Lymphatic Drainage Therapist and Community Care College (CCC) graduate, presented an advanced seminar to the evening massage therapy (MT) class on lymphatic drainage, Sept. 12.

“Guest speakers are a great way to supplement the students’ every day learning. We are so lucky to have well-trained alumni that are willing to share their expertise with budding massage therapists,” said Ross Ashcraft, MT department head.

The technique uses a touch of no more than 1 oz. of pressure as the lymph system is close to the surface of the skin. Each of the students had opportunity to give and receive a neck treatment which sparked greater enthusiasm in the work because it is not a difficult or complicated therapy to grasp. The body has an intricately woven lymph system that when trained the practitioner can feel its flow.

Tammy showed the class some before and after images of her clients so that we could see the remarkable results of Lymphatic Drainage. At the close of the demonstration she passed out a flyer of classes available from the Chickley Health Institute where she received her training. She explained that there were only three lymphatic drainage therapists in Tulsa including her. She stated that with its growing demand there is lots of room for more therapists. Many attending shared their interest in pursuing the training.

Students in the CCC MT program engage in supervised “hands-on” training in traditional Swedish massage and other modalities such as hydrotherapy, sports massage, clinical protocols, chair massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, lymphatic massage, and therapeutic spa treatments. Graduates will be fully prepared to take the national certification and be eligible for Tulsa city licensure. Positions in a wide range of health related workplaces such as: sports medicine clinics, orthopedic offices, physical/occupational therapy, assisted living facilities or naturopathic clinic are possible options for graduates.

For Immediate Release

Tulsa, Okla., (August 23, 2011) – The Community Care College (CCC) Student Ambassadors have teamed up with the Broken Arrow Chapter of Blue Star Mothers for a donation drive for soldiers overseas.

“It is our hope to contribute items and monetary donations for those fighting for our country overseas. This is the least we can do for them,” said Tekoya Boykins, CCC Student Ambassador Faculty Coordinator.

From August 22 through September 12 the Ambassadors will be collecting items at (CCC) and its branch campuses, Clary Sage College and Oklahoma Technical College, in hopes of increasing the number of care packages sent.

Blue Star Mothers is an organization of mothers who have or had children in military. Every month the Broken Arrow chapter sends at least 250 packages overseas. Due to a decline in donations and monetary contributions, this number has decreased to less than 150 packages sent per month.

Student ambassadors are chosen through an application process in which leadership, enthusiasm, character, communication skills, professionalism, positive attitude, involvement on campus and initiative are desired qualifications. He or she must maintain a 90% attendance percentage, 3.0 GPA and have an instructor recommendation. Ambassadors serve as support for the College as well as the community.

Tulsa, Okla., (August 17, 2011) – Community Care College (CCC) will continue offering the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Basic Life Support CPR course, after receiving an extension of accreditation.

“I’m excited that we received a two year renewal. Our evaluator said that our teaching technique was above their standard. I’m very excited about the benefits and opportunities that this certification provides our students,” said Nancy Dubuc, medical assisting (MA) department head.

Accreditation was extended after the AHA evaluator observed CCC students and their instructors during their Medical Emergencies course. Community Care College has taught the American Heart Association’s BLS CPR course since February and has certified hundreds of students in that time.

The American Heart Association publishes the standards for providing basic and advanced life support, including proper performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The AHA offers the most widely accepted certification for basic life support (BLS).

Tulsa, Okla., (July 19, 2011) –The dental assistant students recently had a former Community Care College (CCC) dental student as a guest speaker.

Betsy Seymour, who is now employed by Dr. Ed Grimes, came to speak with the students on “How to be an asset in today’s dental practice”. Betsy works as Dr. Grime’s front office assistant, where she handles all the financial arrangements, schedules appointments, and files all dental claims.

She talked to the students about good communication between the patients and staff, but more importantly, good communication between the front office and the clinical assistants. Wendy Lemon said “this is very important for the students, because they need to understand the importance of being a team player and getting along with everyone in the office in order to put the patients’ needs first.” The students were very inquisitive and they really seemed to enjoy the presentation.

Betsy recently graduated from CCC in the spring of 2011. She is employed full time at Dr. Grimes Endodontic office here in Tulsa. She enjoys speaking with the students and is trying to arrange future presentations to speak on a regular basis with the dental assisting students.

For Immediate Release

Tulsa, Okla., (June 30, 2011) - Community Care College (CCC) veterinary assistant (VA) students took a field trip to the Tulsa Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

“You can tell someone about the animals needing homes, but until you visit a shelter and see what these loving, homeless, animals are going through you would never be able to imagine,” said Charlie Marks, VA department head.

During the past week, students had been learning why it is truly so important that they are educated future clients on the importance of having their animals spayed and neutered. If this message is not carried out, animal populations will increase, making more homeless animals that are euthanized daily in shelters all over the country.

During the visit to the Tulsa SPCA, the students realized that this message needs to get out on a larger scale. The amount of homeless animals that crowd the local shelters is very alarming. The SPCA is a no kill shelter, and due to this issue, it cost a great amount for them to operate without the assistance from the surrounding community.

The TSPCA served as Tulsa’s only non-government animal rescue and adoption program in Tulsa until the 1950s. It was founded during a meeting in a concerned Tulsan’s home mainly to help homeless dogs and cats and to protect against abuse of draft animals used to do tilling on farms and heavy work in the mines and oil fields.

The VA program is designed to prepare the student with the basic knowledge and training necessary to function as an entry-level employee in a veterinary setting. The program is carefully balanced between theory and practical instruction, including clinical and administrative training. Veterinary assistants work in all phases of animal care, including surgical nursing, laboratory procedures, and office administration.

“Everyone feels nervous about taking exams. We like to offer out students some tips to help you make the most of your revision time and keep those nerves under control,” said Jana Andrews, ST instructor.

An examination is a test of learning, not memory. Examiners want to see evidence that you have drawn on your knowledge to develop a reasoned argument, rather than replicate course notes and textbook facts. Revision should be a process of consolidating understanding rather than cramming as much information as possible before the morning of the exam.

How to study, there is no right way to revise as long as you have all the tools you need.

Turn your notes into revision tools;

Write ideas and facts on to cards to use as ‘prompts’

Write key facts/notes out and display these around the house where you will see them

Take breaks often enough so that you don’t get too tired

Make sure there is plenty of lighting and comfortable seating

Use revision checklists or syllabuses for each subject as a starting point

Don’t stay up late, being too tired will not be beneficial for you taking the test

Know about the test before you take it, how long will you have, can I have scratch paper, how many questions are there?

Eat a sensible meal beforehand, having a full stomach allows for you to concentrate better

Review the test before you start to answer the questions. Re word the hard questions so that you may understand it more

Tulsa, Okla., (June 6, 2011) – The newly launched bike share program, Green Fleet, at Community Care College (CCC) and its sister campuses, Clary Sage College (CSC) and Oklahoma Technical College (OTC), has resonated with the CCC Fitness and Health Trainer (FHT) students.

“The Green Fleet bikes are a great resource to help extend each student’s educational experience within CCC, OTC and CSC. The students really enjoyed it,” said Chris Norman, FHT department head.

FHT class checked out the Green Fleet bikes through the library system at the campus bookstore, The Big Apple, and took them out for a study session. Along the course they had several check points where they stopped and the instructor quizzed them on review questions for their final. Not only was there exercise, there was education at the same time.

This FHT program covers the essential components of fitness and health necessary to produce qualified fitness professionals. This career field continues to grow as our nation becomes increasingly concerned with health and wellness. Graduates will be prepared to work in a wide variety of facilities as fitness instructors or personal trainers. Upon completion of the NASM-CPT, students will be eligible for advanced certifications in Performance Enhancement Specialist and Corrective Exercise Specialist through NASM. Additionally, graduates will be academically prepared to start their own fitness businesses using advanced leadership and administrative skills.
