Become A Pharmacy Technician!
A Pharmacy Technician helps licensed pharmacists provide medication and other healthcare products to patients in hospitals and in the local pharmacies and neighborhood drug stores. Technicians perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication for patients, such as counting or measuring medications, labeling containers, maintaining patient records, and preparing insurance claim forms. It is expected that demand for trained technicians will increase due to the aging population and the increased use of medications.

CONSIDERING A CAREER AS A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN
If you are a recent graduate looking for a career in the health care industry, then a career as a pharmacy technician may be worth considering. Highly in demand, the need for pharmacy technicians is increasing as retailers expand their pharmaceutical services and scientific advancements continue.
The National Pharmacy Technician Association reports that there are over 39,000 pharmacy technician job openings each year. They also report that pharmacy technician job growth is expected to be over 28 percent in the next decade with a median annual salary of $23,650.
The prestige of this job is growing, and as pharmacists are taking on more active roles in direct patient care, pharmacy techs are also taking on more and more responsibilities.
Some of the responsibilities of a pharmacy technician include:
- Assisting with prescriptions by counting pills
- Measuring medications
- Labeling products
- Verifying prescriptions from doctors
- Maintaining patient records
- Tracking insurance information
- Assisting patients with insurance forms
Pharmacy techs are supervised by licensed pharmacists and unlike pharmacy assistants who run the cash register or answer phones, pharmacy technicians work closely with the pharmacist, specifically to ensure safe and accurate handling of each prescription.
Although a pharmacy tech career will require a lot of direct contact with the public, it may be a good choice for those who do not wish to be actively involved in the physical care of patients. A pharmacy tech will more than likely be employed at a retail pharmacy, and will spend their time in a comfortable work environment outside of a physician’s office or hospital. Technicians are not permitted to consult with patients about their medication. Those questions fall under the expertise of the licensed pharmacist.
